Water Heater Heat Traps
Heat traps are valves or loops of pipe installed on the cold water inlet and hot water outlet pipes on water heaters.

By adding a u shaped dip in the pipeline the hot water gets stuck at the top of the loop while the cold is able to pass through the dip and enter the tank.
