Removing Tile From Concrete Floor
Choose a starting point and work the masonry chisel under a tile.
Removing tile from concrete floor. Replacing a few cracked or damaged tiles may be a better plan than replacing an entire floor or wall. Cut the tile into six inch wide strips using a utility knife or floor stripper. First things first you need to work the chisel that connects the tiles and concrete. If there is no obvious starting point choose a gout line near a corner and start pounding away with hammer and chisel.
Start at a broken tile or between tiles where the grout has loosened. If it is too attached to the concrete just continue hammering until you are able to completely lift off the tile. If the tile refuses to loosen up despite all your efforts try to use a small jackhammer. Consider renting a jackhammer with a chisel when removing a tile floor.
Continue removing the tiles using a chisel and mallet. If the tiles are relatively loose try using the floor scraper to remove several rows at a time. Once you remove the first few pieces of tile it ll be much easier to maneuver the chisel underneath the next pieces. If your wall tiles are fixed to drywall or stucco then you really do need to be careful when you are removing the tiles because this type of surface is easily damaged.
Removing tile from concrete will require you to use your strength to the fullest because you have to knock the tiles out instead of them coming out without any real force. Work the chisel between the tiles and the concrete hammering them up with a 2 lb. Work the chisel under the tiles forcing them loose. Floor tile might be fixed onto a cement or concrete surface in this case the surface doesn t damage easily and is ideal for using power tools to remove tiles quickly.
Broken tiles and loose grout where the floor is already compromised are great places to start. Position the chisel sideways in such a way that it will hit what is under the tile and not direct the pressure on the concrete. Use a 3 4 or 1 in. A vinyl sheet is more painless to pick up.
